Seiko leads the way when it comes to introducing new technology into watches. The Kinetic 1st appeared in Seiko in 1987 and is still prevalently used today. This year, Seiko introduced a new series consisting of both quartz and Kinetic movements, that while have no specific name to them, have acquired the nickname “Matrix”, due to their cool blacked out and futuristic type look.
The Seiko Kinetic SKA555 is one of several new pieces introduced in this line. The case and bracelet are both stainless steel and black ion plated. The finish does not seem black, but almost a gun metal type color, which looks very nice. The quality in build is excellent for the money and the overall design is very cool.
The dial is black and recessed with bright blue accents that really grab the eye. The numerals are 3 dimensional and stand tall above the dial. The bright blue is also used as rings around the underside of the bezel as well as the 2 crowns. I think these elements really make this an attractive piece and contribute a lot to it’s futuristic type design.
The movement is Seiko’s Kinetic Caliber 5M63. Kinetic basically uses a rotor that swings with your body movement, and uses that energy to re-charge the battery. The 5M63 is a 3 hand with date that will also display power reserve. At a full charge, the movement will last 6 months without any movement. To check the energy level, you would push the top right button, and the second hand will jump to display energy. If the second hand lands near 12 o’clock, it is close to dead and needs a recharge. If it lands closer to 6 o’clock, it will have close to 6 months of energy. The accuracy rating is within 15 seconds a month deviation, but performance tends to be better when the watch is closer to a full charge.
The Seiko Kinetic retails for $395, but can be directly purchased through our site for $296.25 HERE. This is another excellent, not to mention great looking, watch from Seiko this year. Of course, if there are ever any questions, feel free to contact us at 1-800-486-3996.
