BASELWORLD 2016 – CASIO G-SHOCK NEW RELEASES

BASELWORLD 2016 – CASIO G-SHOCK NEW RELEASES

Casio seems to constantly coming out with a steady stream of new items, and at this year’s Baselworld show, they took the wraps off a bunch of new and interesting models.

Let’s start by taking a look at MR-G. They have introduced two new models. The 1st is a limited edition with a unique texture and the other uses a unique copper colored accent. Both are very exciting pieces.

Another new introduction for G-Shock’s premium line up at Baselworld 2015 is a take on the ever popular Baselworld Special Limited Edition from 2014, the MTG-S1000BS.  This piece uses multiple layers of IP and is burnished in order to give it a distressed or vintage look.  The LE from last year was so wildly popular that it only makes sense that Casio would introduce something with a similar concept and finish.

G-Shock Launch Event In NY Featuring MT-G, GPW1000, And MR-G MRG-1000 Introduced To The USA

Trump Soho NY

Last week I had the distinct honor and pleasure of going to New York for the national release of the latest and greatest from Casio G-Shock.  The event was held at the top of Trump Soho, and the image above is the beautiful view we had at the top.

G-Shock Store Soho

The first stop on my visit was to the G-Shock store in Soho, where I met up with our friend Michael Eckhaus, the Director of Sales for Casio’s watch division.  Coincidentally, the founder, father and creator of G-Shock himself, Mr. Kikuo Ibe was at the store signing autographs and taking pictures with some of his biggest fans.  It was truly an honor to meet him.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock

The upstairs of the Soho store is where we met Mr. Ibe which was not just in any room, but practically a museum of some of the great models of G-Shock ranging back from the early 90’s.  People were standing in line to meet Mr. Ibe, even a couple of which got his autograph on their arms, and went right away to go get it tattooed.  Their fan base is some of the greatest out there, with a strong dedication to the world of G-Shock.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock autograph

We even got ourselves a nice autograph for the store which is now on display.  Mr. Ibe proved himself to be an extremely nice guy, and very funny to boot!  The following he has created for the G-Shock brand is something like I have never seen, ranging from people who strictly collect G-Shock for colors, limited editions, and the funkiest pieces they can create, all the way up to avid collectors of high-end timepieces.  The range of people into G-Shock is astonishing.

G-Shock-Event-10

The whole reason I was even there was because of the launch of G-Shock’s newest technology, the new GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor GPW1000.  The technology they crammed into these pieces is overwhelming in a way, but thankfully it’s as intuitive as an iPad, maybe even the Apple Watch (which is still really yet to be determined).  Overall though, The GPW1000 is very easy to use.

DJ VP of Casio USA

The event started and David Johnson (DJ), Vice President of Casio’s watch division started the night and when he did, you could tell he was incredibly passionate about their products.  He’s not the only one, everyone at Casio takes great pride and works so well together, it’s truly impressive.

Mr. Shigenori Itoh President of Casio USA

DJ then introduced Mr. Shigenori Itoh, CEO and President of Casio USA to take the stage.  Mr. Itoh discussed the success of the Metal Twisted (or MT-G) G-Shock’s which he was a huge part in the development of.  Mr. Itoh then introduced Mr. Ibe to speak about the challenges of creating the MT-G.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock

I mentioned Mr. Ibe was funny.  The story he told was surrounded by a “little white lie”.  With a team of 8 young designers, Mr. Ibe had motivated them to create what was thought to be impossible…  A metal G-Shock that still maintains the durability of every G they had previously created.  The “small white lie”, Mr . Ibe told his team was that there would be a BIG interview with a world famous magazine after the project was completed.  Of course, he had no idea how he was going to get this interview, but he remained confident it would happen.  He motivated his team, telling them they were the only ones who could do it.  In the end, they got their “famous” interview and Mr. Ibe could wipe the sweat from his brow.  A great story, and the entire speech can be seen in the video below…

AZFTBlogVideoLink

While this video is 30 minutes long, it is very entertaining and very exciting.  This proves the evolution of G-Shock in the watch world.  They have some amazing new products that we know everyone across the globe will love.

G-Shock-Event-5

Another part of the reason I was there, was Casio had asked me to speak at their event along with a couple of other retailers.  My part was to talk about GPS and it’s use in watches today, but most importantly, the expectations of the new GPW1000.  I had a great opportunity to play with the piece prior to the release and learned a lot about it.  You can see our first hands on review of the GPW1000 HERE.

G-Shock MT-G Black Rose Gold Orange MTGS1000BD-4A

The watches unveiled that night were incredibly impressive and expand on G-Shock’s expansion into the luxury market (especially in this country).  They introduced two new versions of Metal Twisted G-Shocks, one with black hard coating, rose gold and orange accents, which will be limited production under model number MTGS1000BD-5A.  See it on our site HERE.

G-Shock MT-G Basel World Special MTGS1000BS

Another piece introduced was the MT-G Basel World Special.  Getting to see it hands on was a treat.  It has a truly unique finishing process utilizing a gold ion plating that is then layered over in black.  Burnishing away the gold, and blending with the black plating that gives it a distressed or vintage look to it that only contributes to its character.  This gives a weatherd bronze type color that expresses the toughness of G-Shock’s as they are worn over the years.  Sadly, this model is limited to only 500 pieces globally, and will be extremely difficult to find.

Casio G-Shock MR-G MRG-G1000 MRGG1000-1A

The new GPW1000 models were also featured during the event, but the big news was at the very end.  For the first time ever, MR-G is making its debut in the US market!  Not only that, but this will feature a MR-G exclusive version of the GPS Atomic Solar Hybrid movement.  This new MRGG1000B-1A will feature a 49mm wide by 16.6mm hardened titanium case and bracelet that also has a DLC (or Diamond Like Carbon) coating.  This will be now the highest priced G to ever touch US soil at a $3,000 retail.  These will become available in limited quantities at the beginning of 2015.  See it on our site HERE.  The crowd was amazed and ooh’s and aahh’s filled the room.  The night came to an end and people relaxed, had a few drinks (including some GPS-tini’s) and chit chatted for a while.  Afterwards, I was lucky enough to spend some time with some of Casio’s team and our friend Ariel Adams from aBlogtoWatch.  Earlier, I brought up the new Apple Watch as Ariel and DJ had a great discussion about smart watches.  While I think all of us there are big Apple fans, the topic of the “smart watch” was something discussed and ended something along the lines of “that’s not a smart watch.  It still needs the phone in order to really do much of anything.  Now this… (as he shows the GPS Hybrid) is a SMART WATCH”.  A totally proven point as it is independently controlled, has tons of functionality , breaks down the Earth to a 2.6 billion piece grid, determines your location through GPS  and is powered by light, not an outlet.  I’ll admit, I was impressed by the Apple Watch, but DJ had an excellent point that I totally agree with.

Ariel got some really impressive pictures of the new G-Shock MR-G MRG-G1000 GPS Atomic Solar Hybrid and a great write up on aBlogtoWatch HERE.

G-Shock-Event-1

Before I knew it the trip was over and I was saying good bye to NYC.  I would sincerely like to thank everyone involved for such an awesome trip and being such a great company to work with.  As I mentioned in the video, all of us here at AZ Fine Time are extremely proud to be a part of the ongoing evolution of G-Shock!  Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Two new additions to the wildly popular MT-G line up are in future.  Both (as all MT-G’s) are going to be extremely limited.  The MTGS1000D will be very similar to the regular stainless steel model, with red accents on the dial, and red resin lining the bracelet.  The MTGS1000BS is going to be even more difficult to get as it is coming in to the US in extremely small increments.  The distressed steel and yellow gold plated LE looks truly impressive, and of course will be in very high demand.

Edifice introduced a very impressive use of Bluetooth technology.  Not only will the new EQB500 adjust the time according to your phone, but the Bluetooth is also utilized for recording lap time logs and many other functions.  There is a lot more to come on this piece.

We saw a lot of other cool items at the Casio booth.  Here’s some of the top tier Japanese domestic models.  Not available to the states, but they are still very impressive!

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

With 2013 coming to an end, we are bringing you our final watch review of the year, and probably one of the most anticipated releases collectors have anxiously been awaiting…  The new, hand made, radio controlled and tough solar, Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A!

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1AThe Metal Twisted G is something that is not necessarily a 1st for Casio, having had the premium range of G-Shock’s (Mr. G) available in Japan for sometime now.  The new MT-G series is similar in traits of quality of construction with a larger, bolder, and with even more advanced technology.  This new, luxury, Metal Twisted G-Shock is crafted at Casio’s Yamagata factory (which also produces the Mr. G, Protrek Manaslu, and Oceanus line), and is manufactured completely in house, which is something shocking (no pun intended) to consumers, but also something Casio should be tremendously proud of.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

To start, the MT-G lives up to the durability of the classic G’s, having all the major characteristics that make them so indestructible.  The construction is built to withstand shock, centrifugal gravity, and vibration thanks to its elaborate Core Guard Structure composed of stainless steel on both case front and back with resin sandwiched between.  The case is secured with tension screws and Casio’s proprietary Alpha Gel (an insulator gel composed of silicone and other materials) which ad substantially to the shock and vibration resistance.  The Alpha Gel can be found surrounding the movement, but also near the lugs and bezel.  Another note on durability is that the hands are meticulously calculated to be balanced and stay secure under the harsh conditions G’s are built for.  The MT-G also uses sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, something rarely seen in most G’s.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1AThe bracelet is made to be extremely durable, but is also very well finished.  The combination of brushed and high polish finish give great detail, while the back side of the bracelet is lined with a fine resin, not only giving it a classic G-Shock feel and added shock resistance, but is also soft and cool, due to its low-thermal conductivity.  The connection from the case to bracelet are cylinder shaped lugs rotating the bracelet, which looks impressive from a design stand point but also hug the wrist making for good shape and keeping it comfortable.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

The dynamic design of the case is complimented by a deeply recessed, dual layered dial in dark grey with a diamond like texture.  The dial displays centralized 3 hand time, day of the week while in time keeping mode and other mode functions when adjusted to the specific mode.  There is also a 24 hour counter synced with the main clock displayed between 10:00-11:00, and a secondary time zone displayed at 3:00 (word time) with an AM/PM indicator on the lower left side, date below 4:00, and indicators for successful radio control reception around 11:00.  The indexes run very steep from the top of chapter ring to the lower portion of the dial, and give a 3 dimensional look.  The indexes have a vertical brushed finish with Neo-Brite that glows in green at the top, while the hands glow a cool blue adding a nice contrast for night time legibility.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

Now we get into the awesome functionality of this timepiece.  Casio’s proprietary Smart Access technology comes into play in the 5369 module, utilizing an electronic crown to control the setting of timezones.  The centralized time or “home time” is set by unlocking the crown, pulling it out two clicks and then turning until the second hand points to the desired timezone’s city code located on the inner portion of the bezel.  There are 29 timezones to choose from.  The secondary timezone (sub dial at 3:00) or your “world time” is adjusted by pulling out the crown one click as opposed to two, and doing the same.  Both of these adjustments will need to be done in timekeeping mode, which can be recognized by the when the mode hand at 7:00-8:00 is pointing at the day of the week.  The home time and world time can easily be swapped between the 2 displays by pushing and holding the upper right button for about 3 seconds.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

The lower left hand button is used to change modes.  Pushing it once from standard timekeeping mode will engage the 1/20th of a second chronograph.  The chrono is displayed with the 1/20th of a sec at the “mode” sub dial at 7:00-8:00, and the seconds and minutes at the 3:00 “world time” sub dial.  The upper and lower right button are used to start, stop, and reset as with any other chrono.  Pushing the lower left button again will engage the countdown timer.  The timer can be set anywhere from 1 minute to 120 minutes and an alarm will sound once complete.  The timer is displayed at the 3:00 sub dial, and can be set using the electronic crown out at the 1st click.  The pushing the lower left button again will be for your alarm.  The alarm is also displayed at 3:00, and can also be set via the electronic crown out one click, and can be turned on or off by pushing the upper right button with the crown closed.  The audible alarm will sound ten times once it hits the set time.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1AThe build is quite large at a 53.5mm diameter, but really probably wears more like a 48mm due to the protruding parts on the case sides.  The watch is not incredibly heavy at 188g, but has far more heft than a typical resin G-Shock.  The MT-G is both Tough Solar and Multi-band 6 (atomic) meaning it is powered by light (going up to 5 months in the dark before needing to be recharged) and will connect to radio control towers automatically at night or manually, in order to correct accuracy.  This particular model retails for $900.  There is also a black ion-plated version (MTGS1000BD-1A) available now at $1,000 and a Limited Edition model (MTGS1030DB-1A) slated for delivery sometime in Jan. 2014 at $1,100.

Casio Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

This new series of MT-G is going to be extremely limited to retailers and without a doubt has already been a tremendous success here at AZFineTime.com.  Since G-Shock’s launch in 1983, the brand has maintained its reputation as one of the most durable timepieces in the industry.  It’s amazing to see that 30 years later, they have introduced a piece under the same strict guidelines, that has new a new refinement to appeal to watch collectors of all sorts, and even to the generations who grew up wearing G-Shocks, that are now looking for something more professional.

This MT-G MTGS1000D-1A can be purchased directly on the AZ Fine Time site HERE.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 1-800-486-3996.

Metal Twisted G-Shock – MT-G – Coming Soon

Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

Metal Twisted G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000D-1A

In celebration of their 30th anniversary, Casio G-Shock has introduced a ton of great new limited editions, unique products and some advanced technology that is near indestructible.  One of the most intriguing products, that was just recently announced, was the launch of the MT-G (or Metal Twisted G-Shock) this fall.  G-Shock is going upscale and producing a new series of G’s that will not only have high quality materials and elaborate designs, but also the latest technology, making for a new timepiece that is sure to make a heavy impact.

Twisted Metal G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000BD-1A

Twisted Metal G-Shock MT-G MTGS1000BD-1A

The new MT-G collection will consist of a stainless steel and resin combination for the case and bracelet.  The use of resin in the case and lining the inside of the bracelet is not only to help keep the nostalgic feel of a G-Shock, but to also improve shock resistance and because it is less conductive of heat.  While the pieces are all Triple G resist (resistant from shock, centrifugal gravity, and vibration) the high tech movement is also secured in Casio’s new Alpha Gel, which is a proprietary mixture of silicone and other elements, to upgrade the shock and vibration resistance.  Overall, you have a high quality and elaborately built case and bracelet that retains the durability that G-Shock is renowned for.  On top of all that, they use scratch resistant sapphire crystal with anti-glare coating.

The movements for the MT-G collection will feature Casio’s “Smart Access” technology, allowing the wearer to change timezones simply by pulling out the crown one click and turning until the city code desired is indicated by the second hand.  The hands will then automatically adjust to the appropriate time.  The movement also has a chronograph, alarm and is radio-controlled for immaculate accuracy.

These new Metal Twisted G-Shock’s will range from $900 for the stainless steel model, $1,000 for the black plated and $1,100 for the Limited Edition.  They are scheduled to be released this November and will be available at AZ Fine Time.
