Mido Two Crown Diver Chronograph M005.914.37.050.00

At the 2014 Baselworld Fair, Mido debuted a great assortment of novelties for the year.  Most exciting, and something AZ Fine Time has been anxiously awaiting, is the introduction of new calibers to the Mido line up, with extended power reserves as you have seen in some of the other Swatch Group brands.  One of our favorites this year is the new Mido Two Crown Diver series, now in a new chronograph, with 60 hour power reserve.

Mido Two Crown Diver Chronograph M005.914.37.050.00

Mido Two Crown Diver Chronograph M005.914.37.050.00

The first in this series is the M005.914.37.050.00, with cool blue accents for the hands, indexes, and the first 15 minutes of the inner rotating bezel.  We have seen a nice assortment of black and orange color combinations from Mido in the past.  The addition of this new color to the 44mm PVD case with black Geneva striped dial makes for a beautiful addition to the series that we have not seen before.  The strap attachment for this model is rubber with a black PVD coated deployment clasp and will retail for $2,300.

The second in this new series is a more traditional color combination from Mido including a anthracite Geneva striped dial and orange accents.  Only the chronograph counters hands will have orange luminous material and there is also orange accented on the 15 minutes of the inner rotating bezel as well as the screw down chronograph pushers.  The stainless steel case and bracelet will be finished in polished and brushed attributes, and have an open case back to see the highly decorated ETA base movement.

As most people know, ETA is owned by Swatch Group.  Over the years, other brands such as Hamilton and Tissot have started to debut unique movements in the brands, with exclusive calibers for each brand.  Now, Mido will have their own ETA modified movements unique to their brand.  The new caliber uses an improved mainspring to provide the 60 hour power reserve and has gorgeous decoration including perlage, striping and blue screws.  The M005.914.11.060.00 is set to retail at $2,230.

The final piece in the 2 Crown Diver Chronograph is the M005.914.17.030.00.  This model will have a silvery-white striped dial, stainless steel case, and rubber strap with deployment clasp.  All models use a crown at the 10:00 for the inner rotating bezel, have screw down chronograph pushers and have sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.  The M005.914.17.030.00 is going to be $2,200 retail.  All 3 styles are scheduled for September delivery and are currently available for pre-order.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59The Mido Commander is one of the most iconic Mido models ever produced, but originally, wasn’t even called the Commander.  The launch of the Ocean Star line in 1959 introduced a solid single piece case where the movement was actually accessed through the crystal as opposed through the case back.  This along with their Aquadura cork type crown sealing system made for great water resistance in the line.  In more recent years, the design from the original Ocean Star became known as the Commander.  For the end of 2013, Mido introduced their first Chronograph in the series, know as the Commander II Chronograph.  Today we review the M016.414.36.031.59.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59The M016.414.36.031.59 features a 42.5mm stainless steel case with rose gold PVD coating.  The finish is mostly brushed, with a nice polish around the pieces thin bezel.  The watch is just under 15mm thickness, but a contributing factor to that is its anti-reflective coated, domed sapphire crystal.  In all, this piece weighs in at just over 1o5g.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59The dial on this model is incredibly attractive, using circular embossed anthracite colored over lapping sub dials.  The chronograph’s hour counter is located at the 6:00, small continuously running seconds at 9:00, and chronograph minutes counter at 12:00.  The dial itself is silver with a beautiful sunburst pattern and an anthracite track running around the outer edge of the dial.  The baton shaped hands are rose gold and anthracite, with a nice blue luminova on the inside.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59

The movement utilized in this Commander II is labeled as Mido Caliber 1320.  This is a base of a Valjoux 7750 that displays day/date and chronograph features (as listed above), which was modified by Mido.  The movement has 25 jewels, 28,800 bph, 165 parts and over a 42 hour power reserve.  The movement is extravagantly finished with perlage, blue screws and Geneva striping on the Mido branded rotor.  Obviously, due the the transparent case back, this does not have the same exact case as the old Ocean Stars.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59

The  balance wheel used is a glucydur, that also uses a Nivarox I hairspring.  Nivarox is one of only a couple hairspring manufactures in the watch industry and is owned by Swatch Group, who also owns Mido, ETA and many, many other brands/manufactures.  Mido definitely has an advantage being a part of Swatch Group as they have proven to be one of the highest values in the industry for a highly decorated, very well built ETA/Valjoux base movement.

Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59

The new Mido Commander II Chronograph M016.414.36.031.59 retails for $2,000.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 1-800-486-3996 or submit an inquiry through AZFineTime.com.

There’s also an image floating around the web of an 18kt Grand Seiko Spring Drive.  Supposedly, there will be a white SBGA089, yellow SBGA090 and rose gold SBGA092 version with Snowflake dial.  Very limited, and +/- 10 sec a month deviation.

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

After being debuted at the Basel Fair of March 2012,  the new Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22 has finally delivered from Switzerland and is another great addition to the Multifort line up.  With the tremendous success of the Mido Multifort Special Edition PVD, Mido decided to introduce a new variation with a new movement, and entirely different look.

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

This latest rendition of Multifort is a similar dial deign to the M005.430.11.052.00 (which was released last year), yet has a PVD coating, an XL black leather strap with red stitching, and the obvious power reserve indicator at the 7 o’clock.  The PVD case is 42mm wide and 10.6mm thick, making for a nice mid plus sized piece.  The center dial and chapter ring are a matte black while there is a brushed steel (almost gunmetal in color) ring that has recessed index markers.  Under those indexes are Arabic numerals which really contribute to its uncommon design.  Protecting its unique dial is an anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

The black leather croco-calf  strap is really nicely done in a semi-gloss with red stitching that gives it a sporty look.  The strap has a pull apart deployment clasp that is also coated in PVD and bears the Mido logo.  It’s amazing how something as small as the stitching on a band can really effect the character of a watch, and on this piece, it makes for a great compliment to an already impressive piece.

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

The movement is an ETA 2897, highly decorated and beautifully done with Geneva striping, perlage and blue screws.  The finishing that Mido has for the money is incredible and by far a huge value compared to anything similar.  The ETA 2897 is a workhorse movement that has 21 jewels, 28,800 bph, and shows hours minutes and seconds with date and power reserve display.  I can easily say that any 2890 variation movement is great to have and can be found in a wide variety of watches that are a much higher price point.  Luckily, Mido keeps them very reasonable.

Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22

The retail price on the Mido Multifort Power Reserve PVD M005.424.36.052.22 is $1,690.  This is practically unheard of for any 2897.  Mido is a true value brand that is hard to beat and we are proud to have them here at AZ Fine Time.
