G-Shock Launch Event In NY Featuring MT-G, GPW1000, And MR-G MRG-1000 Introduced To The USA

Trump Soho NY

Last week I had the distinct honor and pleasure of going to New York for the national release of the latest and greatest from Casio G-Shock.  The event was held at the top of Trump Soho, and the image above is the beautiful view we had at the top.

G-Shock Store Soho

The first stop on my visit was to the G-Shock store in Soho, where I met up with our friend Michael Eckhaus, the Director of Sales for Casio’s watch division.  Coincidentally, the founder, father and creator of G-Shock himself, Mr. Kikuo Ibe was at the store signing autographs and taking pictures with some of his biggest fans.  It was truly an honor to meet him.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock

The upstairs of the Soho store is where we met Mr. Ibe which was not just in any room, but practically a museum of some of the great models of G-Shock ranging back from the early 90’s.  People were standing in line to meet Mr. Ibe, even a couple of which got his autograph on their arms, and went right away to go get it tattooed.  Their fan base is some of the greatest out there, with a strong dedication to the world of G-Shock.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock autograph

We even got ourselves a nice autograph for the store which is now on display.  Mr. Ibe proved himself to be an extremely nice guy, and very funny to boot!  The following he has created for the G-Shock brand is something like I have never seen, ranging from people who strictly collect G-Shock for colors, limited editions, and the funkiest pieces they can create, all the way up to avid collectors of high-end timepieces.  The range of people into G-Shock is astonishing.

G-Shock-Event-10

The whole reason I was even there was because of the launch of G-Shock’s newest technology, the new GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor GPW1000.  The technology they crammed into these pieces is overwhelming in a way, but thankfully it’s as intuitive as an iPad, maybe even the Apple Watch (which is still really yet to be determined).  Overall though, The GPW1000 is very easy to use.

DJ VP of Casio USA

The event started and David Johnson (DJ), Vice President of Casio’s watch division started the night and when he did, you could tell he was incredibly passionate about their products.  He’s not the only one, everyone at Casio takes great pride and works so well together, it’s truly impressive.

Mr. Shigenori Itoh President of Casio USA

DJ then introduced Mr. Shigenori Itoh, CEO and President of Casio USA to take the stage.  Mr. Itoh discussed the success of the Metal Twisted (or MT-G) G-Shock’s which he was a huge part in the development of.  Mr. Itoh then introduced Mr. Ibe to speak about the challenges of creating the MT-G.

Mr. Kikuo Ibe founder of G-Shock

I mentioned Mr. Ibe was funny.  The story he told was surrounded by a “little white lie”.  With a team of 8 young designers, Mr. Ibe had motivated them to create what was thought to be impossible…  A metal G-Shock that still maintains the durability of every G they had previously created.  The “small white lie”, Mr . Ibe told his team was that there would be a BIG interview with a world famous magazine after the project was completed.  Of course, he had no idea how he was going to get this interview, but he remained confident it would happen.  He motivated his team, telling them they were the only ones who could do it.  In the end, they got their “famous” interview and Mr. Ibe could wipe the sweat from his brow.  A great story, and the entire speech can be seen in the video below…

While this video is 30 minutes long, it is very entertaining and very exciting.  This proves the evolution of G-Shock in the watch world.  They have some amazing new products that we know everyone across the globe will love.

G-Shock-Event-5

Another part of the reason I was there, was Casio had asked me to speak at their event along with a couple of other retailers.  My part was to talk about GPS and it’s use in watches today, but most importantly, the expectations of the new GPW1000.  I had a great opportunity to play with the piece prior to the release and learned a lot about it.  You can see our first hands on review of the GPW1000 HERE.

G-Shock MT-G Black Rose Gold Orange MTGS1000BD-4A

The watches unveiled that night were incredibly impressive and expand on G-Shock’s expansion into the luxury market (especially in this country).  They introduced two new versions of Metal Twisted G-Shocks, one with black hard coating, rose gold and orange accents, which will be limited production under model number MTGS1000BD-5A.  See it on our site HERE.

G-Shock MT-G Basel World Special MTGS1000BS

Another piece introduced was the MT-G Basel World Special.  Getting to see it hands on was a treat.  It has a truly unique finishing process utilizing a gold ion plating that is then layered over in black.  Burnishing away the gold, and blending with the black plating that gives it a distressed or vintage look to it that only contributes to its character.  This gives a weatherd bronze type color that expresses the toughness of G-Shock’s as they are worn over the years.  Sadly, this model is limited to only 500 pieces globally, and will be extremely difficult to find.

Casio G-Shock MR-G MRG-G1000 MRGG1000-1A

The new GPW1000 models were also featured during the event, but the big news was at the very end.  For the first time ever, MR-G is making its debut in the US market!  Not only that, but this will feature a MR-G exclusive version of the GPS Atomic Solar Hybrid movement.  This new MRGG1000B-1A will feature a 49mm wide by 16.6mm hardened titanium case and bracelet that also has a DLC (or Diamond Like Carbon) coating.  This will be now the highest priced G to ever touch US soil at a $3,000 retail.  These will become available in limited quantities at the beginning of 2015.  See it on our site HERE.  The crowd was amazed and ooh’s and aahh’s filled the room.  The night came to an end and people relaxed, had a few drinks (including some GPS-tini’s) and chit chatted for a while.  Afterwards, I was lucky enough to spend some time with some of Casio’s team and our friend Ariel Adams from aBlogtoWatch.  Earlier, I brought up the new Apple Watch as Ariel and DJ had a great discussion about smart watches.  While I think all of us there are big Apple fans, the topic of the “smart watch” was something discussed and ended something along the lines of “that’s not a smart watch.  It still needs the phone in order to really do much of anything.  Now this… (as he shows the GPS Hybrid) is a SMART WATCH”.  A totally proven point as it is independently controlled, has tons of functionality , breaks down the Earth to a 2.6 billion piece grid, determines your location through GPS  and is powered by light, not an outlet.  I’ll admit, I was impressed by the Apple Watch, but DJ had an excellent point that I totally agree with.

Ariel got some really impressive pictures of the new G-Shock MR-G MRG-G1000 GPS Atomic Solar Hybrid and a great write up on aBlogtoWatch HERE.

G-Shock-Event-1

Before I knew it the trip was over and I was saying good bye to NYC.  I would sincerely like to thank everyone involved for such an awesome trip and being such a great company to work with.  As I mentioned in the video, all of us here at AZ Fine Time are extremely proud to be a part of the ongoing evolution of G-Shock!  Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Citizen – Baselworld Releases 2014

Citizen Booth Baselworld 2014

Citizen Booth Baselworld 2014

This year, Citizen had some amazing introductions that continue to prove the impressive high quality the brand is capable of.  This was not only the sense received from the product, but also Citizen’s booth, “Compressed Time”.  With the many new intro’s we saw in Basel, this is only the tip of the iceberg, and there is much more to come later this year.  From what we’ve seen and what we know, we present you with Citizen’s Baselworld 2014 debuts…

Citizen Eco-Drive Altichron Cirrus Limited Edition BN5044-01E

Citizen Eco-Drive Altichron Cirrus Limited Edition BN5044-01E

As we know, the Altichron Cirrus is making its way to the US market later this month.  The new limited edition BN5044-01E is far more impressive in person than pictures can ever do justice.  The 3 layer dial uses a textured crystal giving it a complex and incredible depth, making it very 3D, aside from being extremely colorful.

The Citizen logo is attached to the underside of the watches’ deeply domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.  The other noticeable difference between this and the core versions of Altichron are the hands utilized.  There are 3 hands for time keeping, but the compass will have an independent blue hand, with the orange, yellow and green hands for your altimeter.  With so much going on with the dial, it is surprisingly legible.

Another unique attribute to the Cirrus LE is that the case is not only titanium with DLC and Duratect coating, but also uses a white pearl paint on the case sides.  This pearl paint was achieved by Citizen collaborating with Toyota Motors, making a durable but beautiful “paint job”.

At 51.5mm wide and 18mm thick, the Cirrus is massive in appearance, but comfortable due to its light weight and liquid rubber strap.  The piece retails at $2,650 and as I mentioned, will be available later this month in VERY limited supply.

Citizen Satellite Wave F100

Citizen Satellite Wave F100

The next big introduction is the new Satellite Wave F100 CC2006-53E.  This newly designed timepiece features a new movement that achieves the fastest single satellite connection in 3 seconds, as well as has the thinnest case design of any satellite capable watches at 12.4mm (which is 45.4mm wide).  The new F100 series comes only in the proprietary titanium alloy with Duratect coating, and bears similar design to our beloved brand Attesa.

The multi-faceted design is incredible, with triangular shapes dominating the case design.  They use a combination of different angular brushed finishes as well as mirror polished accents for detail.  The overall design is futuristic and simplistic with a concept of “speed” behind it.  Another intriguing attribute are  the pushers design, which are hollow and is influenced  by the frame of a satellite.

The dial display is quite simple and legible.  There are now 40 city codes to choose from as opposed to 26, all of which are on the inner bezel.  There is a sub dial between 7:00 and 8:00 that displays day of week, daylight savings adjustment, and power reserve.  The dial’s design is influenced by the solar panels off of a satellite, and will come in black or white.  There is also a limited edition with black dial, blue accents and white rubber strap.  The LE has not been confirmed if it will be available in the US market.  Only 500 pieces will be made.

Estimated retails are to be around $2,000 for the 2 bracelet variations.  The F100 Delivery is scheduled to be sometime this fall.

Citizen Satellite Wave Second Generation Steel

Citizen Satellite Wave Second Generation Steel

A second generation of Satellite Wave will also be available this year at a new lower price point.  There are 2 variations, with the 1st being a stainless case and bracelet with grey dial and orange accents.  These will feature the same H909 movement as in the models released in 2013.  The steel variation is estimated to be around $1,300 and will have an arabic 12 marker, with the rest of the markers as indexes.

Citizen Satellite Wave Second Generation Titanium

Citizen Satellite Wave Second Generation Titanium

The other model of Gen 2 Waves will have a titanium case and bracelet, taking away a substantial amount of weight.  This piece will have electric green accents and only index markers.  The case and bracelet design on both pieces is semi-similar to the F100 with a multi-faceted design.  The estimated retail on the titanium model should be around $1,700.

Citizen Eco-Drive Pro Master Depth Meter

Citizen Eco-Drive Pro Master Depth Meter

Another impressive intro this year from Citizen is their new take on the Promaster Depth Meter Diver.  The massive case is inspired by a clam shell and has a good heft to it.  The watch has a blue highlighted luminous hand for current depth, as well as a black highlighted luminous hand for the maximum depth you’ve reached.  There is also a power reserve indicator at 9:00 and orange accents for the minute and second-hand.  This model will also have anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal and is estimated to retail for just under $1,000.

Citizen Eco-Drive Navihawk Limited Edition

Can anyone say Navihawk Limited Edition?  I have to say, this piece looks awesome, especially with the mesh bracelet.  More details to come.

Citizen Eco-Drive Chrono Time AT

Citizen Eco-Drive Chrono Time AT

There’s a new A-T series labeled as Chrono Time A-T coming our way.  This series will use the same H610 movement that is found in select models of Attesa and is actually hand assembled.  The “Direct Flight” movement has a city code indicator next to the date, and time zone changes are as easy as pulling the crown out one click, and turning to the desired city code.  Model number on the pictured model is BY0100-51H.

These models will also include a chronograph and alarm, have sapphire glass, and tachymeter bezel.  There’s a few LE models in this line up, one with blue dial, one with rose gold plate and white dial (pictured above), and black and gold-plated with rubber strap.  Be sure to check out all the pics in the gallery at the bottom of the post.

Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph

Citizen Eco-Drive Shadowhawk Chronograph CA4170-51E

There will also be some new Eco-Drive chronograph models added this year.  There are 2 styles of the model pictured above, the Shadowhawk, the stainless steel (CA4170-51E), and also a two-tone model.

Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph

Citizen Eco-Drive Ecosphere Chronograph CA4154-15E

The other series of Eco Drive Chronograph is a much sportier variation utilizing the same paint technology as seen on the Altichron Cirrus but in a different variety of colors.  The model pictured above is CA4154-15E  More to come on these models later in the year.

Citizen Eco-Drive "L" Series

Citizen Eco-Drive “L” Series

Big news in the ladies models for Citizen this year.  The launch of the Citizen “L” Series will be going global, with a premium quality, uniquely designed series of ladies pieces.  All models will have mother of pearl dials in different tones, all inspired by flowers with dew drops.  The diamond models take this inspiration to the next level, with 3 moving diamonds between the 2 different cases of the watch.

Citizen "L" Series Two Tone

The moving diamonds “float”  in the opening between the cases, while there are still diamonds on the dial.

Citizen "L" Series No Diamonds

Citizen “L” Series No Diamonds

There will also be a no diamond model, with similar design, but no opening between the 2 cases.  These will be at a much lower price point compared to the diamond models.

Citizen Victoria Azarenka Limited Edition

Citizen Victoria Azarenka Limited Edition

Victoria Azareanka will have a limited edition white ladies chronograph with rose gold accents on the case and dial.  The watch will also have white paint on a majority of the case sides.

There are tons of amazing products coming this year from Citizen.  As I mentioned before, this is only a small amount.  Be sure to follow our blog to get more news as it becomes available.
