If you did not read our last post on Campanola, please feel free to check it out HERE. These watches are Citizen’s top of the line in the US market, all being hand made. This includes hand assembled quartz movements, hand finished cases as well as hand lacquered dials. All variations in the Campanola collection are extremely complicated, which makes being quartz beneficial, since it can be a lengthy procedure to set them. Today, we will discuss one of the most complicated, the Campanola Grand Complication AH4000-01X.
As I mentioned, all Campanola’s are hand assembled and hand finished quartz movements. These are not your run of the mill type quartz. The extreme complication and high quality craftsmanship put into these is far above and beyond expectation. Only about 13 of the finest watchmakers at their facility in Shinshu (Nagano) Japan are skilled enough to make these exquisite timepieces.
The AH4000-01X has all the great complications you could possibly be looking for in one watch, using Citizen’s caliber 6770. The perpetual calendar allows the watch to always know the correct day, date, month and even leap year without ever having to correct it. All of these are displayed on the watches dial, which surprisingly is still fairly easy to read. There is also a moon phase display at the 12 o’clock, that can be adjusted by pushing in the internal button on the upper left side of the case, and a 24 hour counter at the 3 o’clock sub-dial.
There is also a chronograph, or stopwatch, which has it’s own independent mode that can be adjusted by pushing and holding the lower left button. When in chronograph mode, the buttons on the right hand side will operate just like most other chronographs.
The other mode is for the minute repeater. Now this is a cool function! When in minute repeater mode, the watch will actually chime out the time by pushing and holding the upper right button for a few seconds. There are 3 different chimes used to indicate the time. The low pitch tone is designated for hours, chiming once for every hour passed. There is a double chime which indicates every 15 minutes passed. Finally, a high pitch chime for every individual minute that follows. This and chronograph mode can be alternated by pushing and holding the lower left button.
The 45mm case is beautifully designed and has an incredible high-polished finish. This beautiful finish is protected by Citizen’s proprietary DURATECT coating, which enhances the hardness nearly 5 times. The dual curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal is domed up high and very thick. These add up to make for a unique looking, but very durable watch.
One of the most intriguing factors of this piece is the dial. It is quite mesmerizing with all the intricate detail and color. This dial is a hand done Urushi lacquer that is done by only one artist. This artist has been doing lacquer work so long, he no longer has fingerprints due to the lacquer build up. The special lacquer is made from the sap of a tree that grows only in eastern Asia (China, Korea, and Japan) and mixed with a gold flake to adorn its already gorgeous look. This is one of few models to use this special technique.
Unfortunately, Campanola will no longer be distributed to the US, but AZ Fine Time bought everything Citizen USA had left in stock. We are currently offering a once in a lifetime, last chance opportunity to own one of these amazing timepieces. Please call us at 1-800-486-3996 for more information.
